Why is it important to consume whole-grain?
Whole-grain kernels comprise three vital components: Bran: This tough, outer layer is a rich source of fibre, minerals, and antioxidants, offering a range of health benefits. Endosperm: Located in the middle layer of the grain, the endosperm consists mainly of carbohydrates. Germ: The innermost tip of the grain holds valuable vitamins, minerals, protein, and healthy plant fats. Whole grains may undergo various processing methods like rolling, crushing, or cracking, if the three components remain in their original proportions, they retain their "whole" status. On the other hand, refined grains have had the germ and bran removed, leaving behind only the endosperm. This results in a high carbohydrate content and the loss of natural fibre and many essential nutrients. The substantial fibre content in whole grains serves as a powerful ally in managing a variety of lifestyle-related conditions. These include high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, constipation, and chronic inflammation, making whole grains a crucial part of a health-conscious diet.
Why do we not add artificial preservatives? What are the dangers of consuming BHA, BHT and TBHQ which are commonly added to kids’ cereals?
We consciously steer clear of artificial preservatives for the well-being of our customers. Additives like BHA, BHT, and TBHQ are commonly found in the ingredient lists of many packaged foods, including kids' cereals. These synthetic antioxidants are added to prolong shelf life and prevent rancidity, but they are distinct from the natural antioxidants found in fruits and whole grains. These synthetic additives have raised concerns due to their controversial reputation. Numerous studies by reputable research organizations, including the National Toxicology Program of the United States and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (part of the WHO), have identified these additives as potentially carcinogenic, meaning they may increase the risk of cancer. Furthermore, the European Commission has classified BHA as a category 1 potential endocrine disruptor, which could lead to hormonal imbalances. While the US FDA permits the controlled use of these chemicals, it is noteworthy that BHA and BHT have been banned from use in foods in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, and across Europe. At Bagrry’s, we are committed to doing right by our customers. Instead of artificial antioxidants, we opt for natural preservatives like tocopherols (vitamin E) and soy lecithin. These alternatives not only extend the shelf life of our products but also align with our dedication to providing healthier choices.
